Tocopherols and tocotrienols as vitamin E

چکیده
Introduction Vitamins are chemical compounds which are components of coenzymes and non-protein ingredients of enzymes. They are essential for life and normal functioning of the body. Vitamins are supplied with food as they cannot be synthesised by the body [1]. Bad diet, impaired vitamin absorption or the use of substances such as caffeine, nicotine and medicines may lead to hypovitaminosis, that is vitamin deficiency. This causes weakness, lowered immunity, muscular and joint pains, fragility of blood vessels, apathy and skin lesions. It also speeds up the ageing process. One of the most effective antioxidants which slow down the ageing of cells is vitamin E. It can penetrate the skin and is absorbed by the intercellular cement, thus protecting against epidermal damage and decreasing the sensitivity of epidermis to UV radiation [1, 2]. The term vitamin E describes a group of α-tocopherol derivatives exhibiting similar physiological activity [2].

Chromatographic Separation of Vitamin E Enantiomers.
Vitamin E is recognized as an essential vitamin since its discovery in 1922. Most vegetable oils contain a mixture of tocopherols and tocotrienols in the vitamin E composition. Structurally, tocopherols and tocotrienols share a similar chromanol ring and a side chain at the C-2 position. Owing to the three chiral centers in tocopherols, they can appear as eight different stereoisomers. Plant so...

Vitamin E has been recognized as an essential vitamin since their discovery in 1922. Although the functions of tocopherols are well established, tocotrienols have been the unsung heroes of vitamin E. Due to their structural differences, tocotrienols were reported to exert distinctive properties compared to tocopherols. While most vegetable oils contain higher amount of tocopherols, tocotrienols...
متن کاملTocotrienols, the vitamin E of the 21st century: its potential against cancer and other chronic diseases.
Initially discovered in 1938 as a "fertility factor," vitamin E now refers to eight different isoforms that belong to two categories, four saturated analogues (α, β, γ, and δ) called tocopherols and four unsaturated analogues referred to as tocotrienols. While the tocopherols have been investigated extensively, little is known about the tocotrienols. Very limited studies suggest that both the m...
متن کاملVitamins and Minerals: The Forgotten Vitamin E
When most people think of vitamin E, more often than not they think of tocopherols—the most prominent being alpha-tocopherol. However, vitamin E refers to a family of eight distinct compounds: four tocopherols and four tocotrienols. While most people are familiar with alpha-tocopherol, other tocopherol forms include beta-, gamma-, and delta-. Similarly, the vitamin E family includes alpha-, bet...
متن کاملTocopherol Content in Edible Plant Oils
Tocol-related compounds, tocopherols and tocotrienols, are important bioactive constituents of vegetable oils. They belong to the family of vitamin E active substances. The term “vitamin E” usually refers to a group of compounds occurring naturally in plants, all deriving from 6-chromanol with a 2-phytyl substituent. Tocopherols are vitamin E compounds with a saturated phytyl chain, while tocot...

Vitamin E, the most important lipid-soluble antioxidant, was discovered at the University of California at Berkeley in 1922 in the laboratory of Herbert M. Evans (Science 1922, 55: 650). At least eight vitamin E isoforms with biological activity have been isolated from plant sources. Since its discovery, mainly antioxidant and recently also cell signaling aspects of tocopherols and tocotrienols...
